Obituary

Max Toby Romero of Rocky Ford passed away on February 20, 2026 at the age of 97 in Ordway. (Maximo Teofilo Romero)

Max was born to Juan and Adelaida Romero in Pasamonte, New Mexico. Max was the second son of four brothers and brother to his three sisters all who preceded him in death. He was the loving husband of Ida for 56 years until her passing in 2011. They had four children Peggy (Mike Edwards) who passed away in 2002, Tomas (Cathy), Wayne (Brenda), and Arlene (Rusty Jackson). He was blessed with 9 grandchildren, Megan Davis (Zach), Pablo (Natalie), Alisha (Sebastian Guzman), Breana (Leah), Kareena (Dahlia), Monica (Cisco), Pat (Kaylie), Tim (Amber) and John Jackson (Stephanie). He also had a great granddaughter Ramona Romero, four great grandsons Sebastian and Alonzo Guzman, Ash Romero, and Fletcher Davis.

He was born and raised in east central New Mexico in the late 1920s, where they herded sheep, and grew their own food in the colonias of Pasamonte and La Tinaja both connected to Maxwell. They migrated north in the early 1940s to a colonia near Fowler with four sons and two daughters, losing a sister Maria at a young age. After WWII Sister Adalena ended up in Utah with her family. Max along with his brothers Phil and Tomas served in the Army during the Korean War. Then Tom and J.B. ended up in Southern California raising their families there. He, his sister, Margaret, and Phil all stayed in Colorado to raise theirs.

Max was good at whatever he did; carpentry was his base skill from hand saws to power saws. If it was made of or attached to wood, he could do it. When it came to sports, he was a skilled athlete and very competitive at bowling, baseball, and basketball. It's been said he was a multi time Ping Pong champion; you couldn’t beat him. He played in pool leagues winning a lot more than losing. After falling and breaking his kneecap, he was told to try golfing as a rehab option. Well, that turned into an obsession. He played golf from the mid-1970s until 2021. His lowest handicap was a 7or 8, and he shot his age at 74. Winning, placing, or just taking your money from you, he played to WIN. As a Super Senior, he won the most money at the end of the year for years.

Max was a deer hunter before his children were born. When Wayne was born and mother and child were ok, he went deer hunting that day with a young nephew Sonny. From the early 70s until the early 2000s, he went deer and elk hunting, without missing a year, dragging Tomas, Wayne’, and Baba along until years later when they were dragging him along. He didn't get to hunt with all his grandchildren, but he was there in camp when Pablo killed a big buck. John killed a pronghorn doe with his old 30-30 rifle, so he taught John how to skin it. Monica killed a pronghorn doe and hung it in his backyard. He also enjoyed fishing all over southern Colorado.

He worked for the Pueblo Army Depot for thirty-three years, doing a short stint in Vietnam one summer leaving Ida with three young kids at home. While he worked 50 miles away, he was always there for all his children in their youth and to this day. He has always been a tough, strong, and little bit ornery man who was not afraid of anyone and a little scary to some. He lived a long time going for the record against his sister Lena 98. He lost his wife and daughter, all his brothers and sisters, some nieces and nephews, and most of his friends. The rest of his offspring are thriving and enjoying successful lives, bringing him pride and joy. He leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews far too many to mention. We will miss him all the while knowing he will join his loved ones who have passed on before him.

Rest in peace Dad, Grampo.

Rosary Held on March 7, 2026 from 8:30 - 9:00 AM at the First Christian Church in Rocky Ford, Colorado with Services to Follow.
