Huerfano County Crash: Juvenile Killed After Jeep Leaves I-25, Investigation Ongoing

I-25 was closed for approximately 3 hours

(HUERFANO COUNTY, COLO) - Today, April 9, 2026, at 3:15 p.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a 2024 Jeep Compass on northbound Interstate 25 at milepost 60. (Eight miles north of Walsenburg).

The preliminary investigation indicates the Jeep was northbound on I-25 at milepost 60. The driver of the Jeep failed to negotiate a right-hand curve and went off the left side of the road. The driver attempted to regain control and collided with several road signs. The left rear door got damaged and opened up, and an unrestrained female juvenile was ejected from the vehicle. The Jeep continued before coming to rest in the center median.

A female juvenile was pronounced dead on scene.

The 31-year-old female driver was transported to a local area hospital along with a male juvenile passenger. It is unknown the extent of their injuries at this time.

The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit is leading the crash investigation with no cause determined at this time.

Northbound I-25 at milepost 60 reopened around 6:35 p.m.
