Springfield Police Seize Defaced, Modified Stolen Guns; Felony Arrest Made, More Suspects Sought
In January 2026, the Springfield Police Department began investigating the theft of two firearms from a vehicle within the Town of Springfield. During the course of the investigation, one of the stolen firearms was recovered during a response to an unrelated 911 call, and the second was located during the execution of a search warrant that occurred this month here in Springfield.
Both firearms had been defaced, meaning the serial numbers had been altered or removed, making them unreadable. One of the firearms showed indications of being modified in a manner that may allow for automatic cycling and firing.
As a result of this investigation, a suspect was identified, arrested, and charged with numerous felony weapons violations. The investigation remains ongoing at this time as we expect it is likely we will identify additional suspects.
The Springfield Police Department reminds the public to secure firearms and valuables that are left inside vehicles. Leaving firearms unsecured creates opportunities for theft and increases the risk of those firearms being used in criminal activity. Anyone with information related to this investigation is encouraged to contact dispatch at 719-523-4511.
