CDOT to begin safety improvements at Trinidad’s Exit 14
Construction on the southbound off-ramp from I-25 begins May 4
Las Animas County — The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contract partner, Concrete Works of Colorado, will begin construction on a project to improve safety at Interstate 25 at Exit 14 in Trinidad. Work begins Monday, May 4 and runs through the end of September.
The I-25 Exit 14 Improvement Project realigns the southbound off-ramp into a straighter configuration while replacing asphalt with concrete paving. Realignment will offer better visibility. The current configuration has a sharp curve making driving conditions less predictable. This is particularly difficult for larger trucks with a tighter turn radius.
“This realignment, in combination with a new concrete road surface, will provide a smoother road surface and route when exiting the I-25, enhancing the safety of the traveling public,” said Region 2 Transportation Director Shane Ferguson.
Construction will occur in two phases. Phase 1 will be constructed off the roadway with few impacts to the traveling public. In late summer, during the second phase, a shutdown of the southbound off-ramp at Exit 14 will be necessary for approximately two weeks. Traffic will be detoured on I-25 to Exit 13.
Traffic Impacts
Beginning May 4, work on new I-25 Exit 14 off ramp will begin with the following impacts:
- Work will take place Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- San Pedro Street will be closed from the Exit 14 offramp (Colorado Avenue) to Commercial Street through August.
- In August, southbound I-25 Exit 14 will be closed to traffic with a planned detour using I-25 Exit 13 to access the City of Trinidad.
