Crash Near Colorado-Utah Border Leaves Vehicle Damaged, Landmark Sign Destroyed
FRUITA, Colo. (June 20, 2026) — A motor vehicle crash along Interstate 70 west of Fruita on Friday evening left a vehicle heavily damaged and resulted in the loss of a familiar roadside landmark, according to the Lower Valley Fire District.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 6:13 p.m. on June 20 to the area of I-70 Mile Marker 231 following reports of a vehicle crash.

When firefighters arrived, they found a vehicle that had left the roadway and sustained significant damage. The driver had already self-extricated from the vehicle before first responders reached the scene.
According to the driver, a blown tire caused the vehicle to lose control, sending it off the interstate and into the roadside area.

Firefighters and emergency medical personnel evaluated the driver at the scene. The patient declined transport to a hospital, and officials reported that no serious injuries occurred as a result of the crash.
While the driver escaped without major injury, the crash claimed an unexpected casualty: the popular “Leaving Colorado” sign, a recognizable landmark for travelers crossing the state line.
The sign was struck during the vehicle's path off the roadway and was destroyed in the incident.
The Lower Valley Fire District acknowledged the loss with a touch of humor, posting: “RIP Leaving Colorado Sign. You served travelers well.”
Responding agencies included Lower Valley Fire District Ambulance 32, Engine 31, and the Colorado State Patrol.
Officials continue to remind motorists to practice safe driving habits and ensure their vehicles are properly maintained, including checking tire condition and inflation before traveling on Colorado highways.
