La Junta Fire Department Quickly Extinguishes Large Dumpster Fire at Sutherlands, Prevents Building Damage

Description: The La Junta Fire Department responded to a large dumpster fire at Sutherlands on Highway 50 Tuesday afternoon. Firefighters, assisted by DFPC Engine 34, Tender 2, and the City of La Junta Street Department, prevented the fire from spreading to the building. Officials determined the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette, and no damage to the store was reported.

La Junta Firefighters Stop Sutherlands Dumpster Fire Before It Reaches Building
Today at approx 1253 pm LJFD responded to the 27000 blk of Hwy 50 in La Junta at Sutherlands for a reported large dumpster on fire next to the building.

Upon arrival of Chief 31, he reported a 40 yard dumpster next to the building with heavy fire coming out of it. Two 1 3/4 attack lines were pulled to start fire attack and cooling off the building.

DFPC Eng 34 arrived and supplied Eng 1 with water and Tender 2 assisted with water supply as well. City of La Junta Street Dept sent a front end loader to pull the dumpster away from the building so crews could open it up to access the inside.

Crews used hand tools to tear apart the debris to make sure full extinguishment was complete.

No damage to the exterior of the building.
Cause of the fire was from a discarded cigarette.
