As evacuation orders change on the #GoldMountainFire and more residents and visitors return home or regain access to previously closed areas, it is normal to see smoke from well within the fire perimeter. While it may be concerning, visible smoke does not necessarily indicate that the fire is growing or that containment has been compromised.

During the mop-up phase, firefighters work systematically through the fire area, locating and extinguishing heat and hotspots that could threaten containment lines. Interior pockets of unburned vegetation, logs, stumps, and other fuels can continue to smolder for days or even weeks after the main fire front has passed.

Firefighters have been working in and around these areas for days and continue to actively patrol, monitor, and extinguish hotspots. The entire fire area remains staffed and managed, with crews assigned throughout the incident.

If you're seeing smoke within the established fire perimeter, there's no need to report each individual smoke column, as crews are already aware of and monitoring these areas. However, if you observe smoke well outside the fire perimeter or see an immediate threat to life or property, please report it to 911.
