Obituary

David Charles DeGroat, 64, of La Junta, Colorado passed away July 26, 2026 at his La Junta home surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 1, 1962 in Saginaw, Michigan to Robert & Elsie (Sadenwater) DeGroat.

David grew up in Beaverton, Michigan and graduated from Beaverton High School. After High School he joined the United States Navy. After the service, David moved from Michigan to Wyoming then to Colorado. He also lived in Texas and Vermont. Always a Gypsy soul. David was a loving husband and father to 3 children. He was strong, funny, loved with his whole heart, and always did right by his family.

David was always helping those in need, a true friend to many, and never met a stranger because they would become his friends shortly after. He encouraged everyone to become the best person they could and always made the best of a bad situation trying to make everyone laugh throughout it. When David was around there was never a dull moment. David was an avid Detroit Lions fan through and through and drove in the truck series at Merritt Speedway in Merritt, Michigan. He was thankful to the Lord for his many blessings.

David is survived by his wife Shelly DeGroat of the La Junta home; children, Angelica (Harrison) Armstrong of Michigan; Chase Robert DeGroat of Billings, MT; and Reece Ryan DeGroat of La Junta, CO; grandchildren, Alexander, Nathan, & Aurora Armstrong, and Iverson DeGroat; aunt, Susan Sadenwater of Michigan and numerous nieces & nephews.

Per David’s request, there are no services planned at this time.
