Crash Involving CSP Trooper Shuts Down I70 Both Directions

Four Cars Involved

(Clear Creek, CO) – Today, at approximately 10:46 a.m., a Colorado State Patrol Trooper was involved in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 mile marker 215, east of the Eisenhower Tunnel. 

The initial findings of the investigation indicate that the Trooper, a K9 handler, was parked on the right shoulder of I-70 eastbound. The Trooper overheard on the radio that there was a car crash behind him in the westbound lanes. The Trooper activated his overhead emergency lights and began turning left across both lanes of traffic. A Subaru Forester that was traveling in the left lane of the eastbound lanes struck the driver's door of the patrol car. Both vehicles then traveled across the center median and slowly struck two vehicles in the westbound lanes. The last two vehicles were a white Chevrolet work truck and a white GMC Sierra. 

The Trooper suffered injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. He is undergoing evaluation and is expected to recover. The driver and passenger of the Subaru, an elderly couple, were transported by ground to a nearby hospital, with an unknown extent of injuries. The drivers of both pickup trucks suffered no injuries. The CSP K9, Buck, was transported to a veterinarian as a precautionary measure.
