Obituary

Derek Alan Romero, 40, of Denver, Colorado, formerly of Walsenburg, Colorado, entered into rest on August 4, 2026, at his home in Denver.

Derek was born on September 30, 1985, in Pueblo, Colorado, to Dolores “DeeDee” Romero. He grew up in Walsenburg and graduated from John Mall High School in 2004, where he proudly played football and wore number 64. He got into the newspaper with a couple of teammates. Derek Romero will always be remembered for the dedication, strength, and heart he showed both on and off the football field. As a member of the offensive line, Derek worked hard alongside his teammates, giving everything he had to help his team succeed.

Derek was part of a group of young men who played together as a team, never gave up, and always pushed forward. His hard work, determination, and team spirit made an impact on those around him and will forever be remembered.

Following high school, Derek attended the Denver School of Automotive and Diesel. He went on to work as an automotive mechanic and also worked in demolition within the construction field. Derek enjoyed working with his hands and had a natural ability for anything mechanical.

Derek was known affectionately by his family and friends as  a nickname given to him by his friend OJ at a young age. He will be remembered for his caring heart, sense of humor, loyalty, and ability to make those around him laugh. He enjoyed music and comedy and was an avid Las Vegas Raiders fan.

Above all, Derek loved his family. His greatest pride and joy was his daughter, Shaylynn Mae Dolores Romero. The love he had for her was immeasurable, and being her father held a special place in his heart.

Derek is survived by his beloved daughter, shaylynn (Destiny Sierra) Romero; his brother, John Romero; his nephew, Cedryk (Victoria) Romero; his great-nephews, Luciano Romero and Lorenzo Romero; and his great-nieces, Elliana Romero and Elaya Romero.

He is also lovingly remembered by his special friends, Melissa Garcia, Isaac Garcia, Guido Archuleta, Robert Page, and Orlando Garcia, along with many other relatives and friends whose lives were touched by Derek throughout the years.

Derek was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores “DeeDee” Romero.

Derek’s life will be remembered through the many memories he leaves behind—the laughter he shared, the friendships he treasured, his love for his family, and the special bond he shared with his daughter. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Rest in peace, Derek “DTox” Romero. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Arrangements have been entrusted to the loving care of the Johnson-Romero Funeral Home.
