Sheep Pen Fire Near Kim, Colorado Reaches 713 Acres, 30% Contained After Lightning Spark

Sheep Pen Fire Update: 713 Acres Burned, 30% Contained South of Kim, Colorado

KIM, Colo. — Aug. 13, 2026, 11:38 a.m. — Fire crews continue working the Sheep Pen Fire south of Kim, Colorado, which has grown to an estimated 713 acres and is currently 30% contained.

The wildfire was started by lightning Wednesday night, prompting a response from Kim Area Volunteers and mutual aid resources.

Crews received significant air support Thursday morning, including one Very Large Air Tanker (VLAT) and two Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATs). The aircraft provided critical assistance in difficult-to-reach areas of the fire, helping ground crews gain an early advantage in containment efforts.

The VLAT and SEATs have since moved on to assist with another fire.

There are currently eight personnel on scene working the Sheep Pen Fire. Mutual aid resources have included South Fork and Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control Engine 4341.

An earlier estimate at 5:11 p.m. Wednesday placed the fire at approximately 400 acres. As of the latest update at 11:38 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, the fire is estimated at 713 acres with 30% containment.
