Weekend Warriors Face Double the Risk
(COLORADO) - As motorcycle riders head out on recreational rides down the twisties of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, new data shows a concerning trend: weekends nearly double the risk for motorcycle-involved crashes.
From 2021 to the present, motorcycle crashes investigated by the Colorado State Patrol have been nearly twice as common on Saturdays and Sundays compared to weekdays. The data highlights a consistent pattern of increased risk during peak recreational riding days.
In 2025, crash data by day of the week shows:
- Monday (73)
- Tuesday (64)
- Wednesday (71)
- Thursday (70)
- Friday (107)
- Saturday (146)
- Sunday (146)
"Weekend rides often mean more traffic, longer trips, and riders pushing their limits on unfamiliar or winding roads," stated Chief Matthew C. Packard, Colorado State Patrol. "That combination can quickly turn dangerous without proper preparation and awareness."
High-Risk Roadways
The most common roadways for motorcycle crashes in 2026 include
- I-25 (19)
- Highway 34 (8)
- Highway 24 (7)
- Highway 40 (7)
- Highway 119, Highway 14, and Highway 50 (6 each)
These routes, many of which include high-speed corridors and mountain terrain, continue to see a higher volume of incidents.
Ride Smart This Weekend
Riders, even those who have owned a motorcycle for years, are encouraged to take proactive steps before setting out on a ride:
- Enroll in a Motorcycle Operator Safety Training course, which offers beginner and intermediate courses
- Ride within your limits, especially on unfamiliar roads
- Wear proper protective gear every ride
- Stay alert for changing road and weather conditions
- Avoid fatigue and plan for breaks on longer rides
Weekend riding offers freedom and adventure, but also comes with increased risk. Riders are encouraged to make safety part of their everyday routine.
