RE: North Gateway Park

The City of Lamar Parks & Recreation Department would like to share information with our community regarding a recent water quality concern affecting the Arkansas River.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has reported that approximately 4.2 million gallons of untreated sewage entered the Arkansas River in Pueblo on August 26–27. CPW has advised visitors at John Martin Reservoir State Park to avoid direct contact with the Arkansas River and reservoir while the affected water moves downstream.

Because the Arkansas River also runs next to North Gateway Park, we want to make our residents and visitors aware of the situation and the information currently being provided by state and local agencies.

North Gateway Park remains open at this time and continues to be available for normal park use. At this time, the City is simply sharing the information available to us so that visitors can stay informed and make appropriate decisions regarding contact with the Arkansas River.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are monitoring conditions and conducting water-quality testing downstream. We will continue to stay in communication with our state and local partners and share relevant updates with our community as additional information becomes available to us.
