Troopers Reveal Top Citations for Riders

Careless riding and speeding vie for the top spot year over year

(COLORADO) – Motorcycles provide a unique opportunity when it comes to a morning commute or a scenic getaway into the mountains. From the first day on the road, riders must hold a Motorcycle Endorsement. This preliminary training requires the rider to operate the machine safely and legally for their own safety and the safety of those around them. 

Over time and distance, riders improve and expand their skills. But troopers want to remind riders that increased experience doesn't justify unsafe lane changes, speeding, and riding distracted.  Without the physical protection of an enclosed vehicle, riders will always face a much higher risk of severe injury or death in any crash. 

As temperatures fluctuate and "motorcycle season" winds down into the winter months, 2026 has shown consistent trends in motorcycle violation statistics compared to previous years.

The top motorcycle charges issued by Colorado State Troopers for 2025 were:

  1. Speeding (215)
    1. 10-19 MPH over (98)
    2. 20-24 MPH over (62)
    3. 25-39 MPH over (55)
  2. Careless Driving (201)
  3. No Motorcycle Endorsement (186)
  4. Failed to provide proof of insurance (92)
  5. Reckless Driving (53)

The top charges issued by Colorado State Troopers from January 2026 through September 1, 2026 are:

  1. Careless Driving (164)
  2. Speeding (162)
    1. 10-19 MPH over (73)
    2. 20-24 MPH over (55)
    3. 25-39 MPH over (34)
  3. No Motorcycle Endorsement (155)
  4. Failed to provide proof of insurance (47)
  5. Reckless Driving (37)

While Careless Driving claimed the top spot so far this year, the top five charges remain the same.  With the deadliest opening quarter for Colorado motorcyclists in nearly a decade,  the Colorado State Patrol will continue strict enforcement for motorcyclists to lower the overall fatal number across the state and ensure everyone has the opportunity to ride again next year.
