Obituary

Carolyn Lee (Mayo) Doherty entered heaven from her home November 17, 2020 at the age of 79. Carolyn was born to Anna Eileen (Mayfield) and Buddy Lavearl Mayo in Pritchett, Colorado, on July 28, 1941.

She attended the Shadel School then Kim School (Class of 1959) where she was a cheerleader and enjoyed class plays. Carolyn completed a cosmetology course in Lamar while waiting for H.S. sweetheart John to graduate. They attended Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas together and married in1960. Both competed on the Sul Ross rodeo teams and she added to her numerous rodeo queen titles.

After graduating with a Home Economics degree, Carolyn taught school briefly in Kim then became John’s ranching partner as a remarkable cowgirl and homemaker. She also cooked at the school a couple years. Carolyn co-founded the Kim Community School Association, participated in Cowbelles, the Kim Alumni Association, and assisted 4-H members. She enjoyed decades of ladies’ bowling league. She and John were fixtures at ball games and rodeos.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her mother, father, an infant son, nephew Mark Goodrich, stepmother Opal Mayo, mother-in-law Lorean Doherty, sister-in-law Betty Irene Doherty, and brother-in-law Leland Goodrich. She is survived by husband John Albert Doherty, son Joe (Lisa), grandsons Sean (Siera) and Matthew, great-grandson Jameson, sister Joanne Goodrich, brother Buddy (Kathy) Mayo and three generations of nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at 10:00 a.m., at Kim Cemetery with Father Henry Wertin of Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Patrick Parish officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to Sangre de Cristo Community Care of La Junta, 207 Colorado Ave., La Junta, Colorado 81050 direct or through the funeral home.
